In 2013 the government of Rwanda reformed high learning and education sector and merged all high public learning institutions into one University of Rwanda. The College of Business and Economics (CBE) of the University of Rwanda inherited the research collaboration/ partnership that the former Faculty of Economics and Management of the Former National University of Rwanda had with the Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) at Jönköping University (JU) in Sweden.

The College of Business and Economics at University of Rwanda is, like many higher learning institutions in emerging economies, trying to find the path to develop from an institution focused on education to become a more research-driven institution. To identify and implement the necessary activities to catalyse this path has been and will be to overall role of the sub-programme in relation to other activities performed by the College.

General objective

The overall objective for which the partnership has been established is to enhance research, teaching, capacity building and the use of scientific knowledge of international quality that contributes to Rwanda's development. It is envisaged that the partnership will strengthen the UR School of Business and UR School of Economics and by training its staff to PhD level, reviewing local masters’ programmes and developing in house PhD programmes needed for the Development of Rwanda Public and Private sectors.
